Fast train bearings

Berlin/Schleinfurt, September 23, 2010 For several years now, Schaeffler Industry has become a major partner in the development of rolling bearings for high-speed trains. When developing these bearings we work closely with vehicle manufacturers and operators to optimize the product to meet specific operating conditions. Schaeffler Industrial Division is the development partner and exclusive supplier of axle box bearings for Russia's Velaro-RUS high-speed train and China's CRH3 high-speed rail project with speeds up to 350 km/h. In tests conducted in accordance with the EN12082 standard, the Schaeffler Group confirmed that the axlebox bearings can be used at 380 km/h.

In addition, the Schaeffler Group develops and produces axle boxes and bearings for electric motors and gearboxes. The double row tapered roller bearing design is the key to the high load-bearing capacity of the axle box bearing. Due to the high-speed train concept, the bearing unit is specially designed for axle loads of 17.7 to 19 tons. The driving components and technical modules of the EMU are arranged under the floor of the entire train, and are not limited to the front and rear locomotives of push-pull trains. EMUs and trailers are arranged at intervals, and the mass distribution of the entire EMU is improved, so that the load acting on a single wheel pair is relatively moderate. Due to the high speed, the design speed of the bearing reaches 2400 rpm. Easy-to-install TAROL units Due to the possible special loads, tapered roller bearing units are mainly used in high-speed applications. The FAG TAROL units supplied by Schaeffler Industrial are easy to install.

The clearance of the TAROL unit has been adjusted, greased and sealed before leaving the factory. It can provide inch and metric series as well as necessary locking parts and fittings, and the installation is quick and reliable. In addition, customized parts, spare parts and load-bearing saddles can be provided according to customer needs. Schaeffler's engineers can also provide professional training for customers' operators to ensure that customers can install axle box bearings correctly. In this way, the customer is certified and authorized to install axlebox bearings. Under high load and ultra-high speed conditions, special attention must be paid to the quality of materials to ensure that the bearings are properly lubricated. To this end, the Schaeffler Group has worked together with steel manufacturers to develop special standards to improve the purity of the steel used.

In addition, the Schaeffler Group uses its own special hardening processes, coating processes and coating types. Additives and viscosity are decisive factors when choosing the right lubricant. The Schaeffler Group works closely with lubricant manufacturers in this regard. At the same time, the amount of grease is also very important, especially in high-speed applications, too much grease will cause the bearing temperature to rise too high and too fast. Optimized axle box shape reduces loads In addition to the bearing units, Schaeffler Industrial also develops and manufactures axle boxes.
